Started Poor, Finished Rich!

David Wong – 1924-2010

David Wong was born in Tianjin, China to a very poor family. His father died when he was one year of age so his mother was forced to raise him in difficult conditions.

As David grew up, communism appealed to him because those who followed it in China had helped his family. Mao’s teachings were attractive to him until he learned of the brutality of the Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution. In his late twenties, David moved to Hong Kong and it was there that he was encouraged to emigrate to Canada.

With no friends or family in Canada, David responded favourably to an invitation to attend a small Baptist Church in Vancouver. It was a new experience for someone who had been taught, “There is no God.” The only thing David remembered of the sermon he heard was a Bible text from Jeremiah 17: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” The Sunday after he heard this message David asked the Lord Jesus to change his heart!

It was in the mid 1980s that David joined the Lighthouse team to reach out to the ever growing number of Chinese seafarers coming to the Port of Vancouver. David was a sower and reaper for the Kingdom of God.

On the 14th of January 2010 God called David Wong home to the place of true riches. This faithful servant had fulfilled his purpose.
