Prince Rupert

In Prince Rupert’s official visitors guide it says, “Prince Rupert, where Canada’s wilderness begins.” In terms of nature, this may be true. When it is not raining (rainfall 240 days per year 2593.60 mm) this area is as beautiful as it gets.

From a spiritual point of view Prince Rupert is defi nitely not a wilderness. God is at work in the hearts of His people. This was revealed to us at LHM in the middle of last summer when we received a phone call from brother Neil Friesen in Prince Rupert. He called to make this request: “Come over and help us. We have a desire to start a ministry to seafarers like you have in Vancouver.”

With a brand new container terminal starting operations in October and cruise ship, coal and grain terminals already in operation, Prince Rupert is becoming a popular seaport on the west coast of North America. The port’s popularity is largely due to its proximity to Asia. Its’ favourable location allows ships to cut two days off of a round trip from the Orient.

In early August Senior Chaplain Teus Kappers and his wife Maria travelled to Prince Rupert. They went to spend a few days with Neil and his wife Elfrieda, to meet other locals and to evaluate the possibilities for the establishment of a seafarers’ mission in Prince Rupert. The Kappers had a very positive and encouraging visit to the northern port. They discovered that even the local Port Authority recognizes the need for a mission centre and that some of the port officials were willing to help in this regard. The possibility of providing a building (as early as next year) to be used as a seafarer’s centre was also discussed and looks favourable.

Please pray for blessing, vision and guidance as a group of men meet together to start Prince Rupert Lighthouse Ministries.
